Profile
Our university is located in Okinawa prefecture and consists of seven faculties and eight graduate schools. Okinawa is blessed with rich nature in subtropical climate and many tourists from the mainland Japan and overseas visit our islands. Okinawa, used to be the Ryukyu Kingdom, had trades with China, Korea and Southeast Asian countries and its culture was greatly influenced by those countries. Taking advantages of such historical background and geographical characteristics, the University of the Ryukyus has emphasized on education and researches rooted in regional characteristics, including 1. Studies in the Asia-Pacific region, centering on Okinawa; 2. Biodiversity in Coral Reefs; 3. Studies of natural disasters due to global warming; 4. GP (good practice) Program and educational programs for neighboring islands and remote areas; 5. Research on information science and energy; 6. Research on tropical agriculture and zymology; 7. Studies on tourism with new approaches; 8. Advanced medicine for tropical infectious diseases, tumors, and agingrelated diseases.
Our university has actively promoted international exchanges with institutions overseas, especially in the Asia and Pacific regions. We have concluded the academic exchange agreements with 69 institutions in 27 countries/areas and many international students have studied on our campus.

Special Programs for International Students
-Special Graduate Programs-
The Graduate School of Engineering and Science offers the Special Programs designed for international students, starting in October and ending in September. All lectures are conducted in English.
[Asia-Pacific Engineering Design Program] Master: Mechanical Systems Engineering, Civil Engineering and Architecture, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Information Engineering
Doctoral: Material, Structural and Energy Engineering, Interdisciplinary Intelligent Systems Engineering
[Okinawa International Marine Science Program] Master: Mathematical Sciences, Physics and Earth Sciences, Chemistry, Biology and Marine Science
Doctoral: Marine and Environmental Sciences
-Japanese Language Programs-
[Japanese Language and Culture Program] This includes beginning, intermediate and advanced levels and two courses are offered, Japanese culture course (focusing on Japanese society and culture), and Okinawa culture course (focusing on Okinawan society and culture). International students admitted as auditors (non-degree students) may take courses and obtain credits.
[Preparatory Intensive Japanese Program for Graduate Studies] The 16-week intensive program is mainly designed for Japanese Govt. Scholarship students such as research students to take before starting their graduate studies as well as teacher training students, aiming at helping students attain sufficient Japanese proficiency to pursue their research and training program.
Service for International Students
[Accommodations] 1. International House On-campus housing for international students and researchers. The House consists of single, couple and family rooms and the term of residence is one year.
2. Student Dormitory The Student Dormitory houses both Japanese and international students. Male and female dormitories are equipped with single rooms and residents share the use of common kitchens, shower rooms and toilets. The Konju-to dormitories are equipped with single rooms and en-suite toilets and residents share the use of common kitchens and shower rooms. Units in New Konju-to dormitories are fully equipped with en-suite kitchens, shower rooms and toilets.
[Tutoring System] Japanese students are assigned to international students as tutors in order to provide them with personal assistance for their studies and daily lives.

[Pre-Arrival Admission to Undergraduate Programs by taking EJU] The Pre-Arrival Admission system gives applicants overseas opportunities to secure admission to undergraduate programs without travelling to Japan for entrance examinations. The Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students(EJU) is held in June and November annually by Japan Student Services Organization(JASSO). This applies to the following courses:

[Student Exchange Programs for exchange students]
1. Univ. Ryukyus Short-term Student Exchange Program(URSEP) offers courses conducted in English and basic-level Japanese language courses. (1 year program starting in October)
2. Short-term Regular Program (STRP) is for students (1)aiming to master Japanese language, (2)taking courses geared toward Japanese students, and (3)having supervisors in their fields of study and getting instruction in English.
