Profile
Established in 1986,the Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts(OPUA) has become the prefecture's exclusive comprehensive arts university composed of the Faculty of Arts and Crafts, the Faculty of Music, the University Research Institute, and Graduate School(MA and PhD Programs).Reflecting the founding principles and objectives,OPUA strives to nature the members of society who will bear the responsibility of creating and expanding innovative cultures of comprehensive arts with a global vision. We promote cultural and academic exchanges among students and faculties through nine sister universities in China,England,Germany,Italy,Thailand, and Taiwan. Our university also aspires to be a unique educational institution that incorporates Okinawa's history and natural geographic environment. One of the distinctive characteristics of educational research at OPUA is the teaching of traditional Okinawan craft-making techniques, particularly within the ceramics and waving/dyeing specialization programs of the Faculty of Arts and Crafts. The training that we offer our students-including the examination of the raw materials used and guiding the evolution of a deeper artistic sensibility-is particularly appropriate for our future artists and experts in their fields.Further, the Faculty of Music established the Ryukyuan Performing Arts Major to train skilled performance artists and instructors in the fields of Ryukyuan classical music,Ryukyuan dance, and kumiodori(traditional music drama).
