Profile
Oita University was newly founded in October 2003, by the merger of the former Oita University and Oita Medical University. It has two campuses: one at Dannoharu and the other at Hasama. The university principles are: offering learner-based education, enhancing creativity, promoting internationality and contributing to society. The university now consists of 4 faculties and 5 graduate schools. The International Student Center (ISC) was established on Dannoharu Campus in May 2000 and formally recognized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in April 2003. The purpose of the ISC is to promote the international exchange activities of Oita University through organizing and providing courses of Japanese language education, Japanese culture, and other Japan-related subjects, which are given mainly in English. ISC provided information on exchange programs and international student affairs. It also offers advices on appropriate course structures and living arrangements to both international student in Japan and Japanese intending to study abroad.

Special Programs for International Students
The Center for International Education and Reserach offers the following programs: -Japanese language courses (six different levels from novice to advanced) and Japan- related courses taught both in English and Japanese. -Special Course for Japanese Language/Japanese Studies majoring students -Intensive Japanese Course for Beginners for holders of Japanese Government Scholarships. -Preparatory Course in Japanese for Korean High School Graduates under the Joint Japan-Korea Science and Engineering Education Scheme. -Two programs (IPOU and Niho) for exchange students from partner universities.
Service for International Students
HOUSING: there are two dormitories for international students with 71 single rooms and 6 family rooms with kitchen and bath. SCHOLARLIPS: Japanese government scholarships, university and Oita Prefecture scholarships as well as several private foundation scholarships are available for international students. SUPPORT SYSTEM: An academic advisor and a tutor are provided for each international student for support. The International Student Center also organizes home visit / home stay program, field trips, and various activities.
Comments & Latest Information
Oita University has been promoting its international programs over the last decade and plans to increase the number of its partner universities in the future. The University has been developing a strong relationship with Asian universities, but at the same time is keen to establish academic links with institutions in other parts of the world. The University has been especially active in arranging student exchanges and in stimulating joint research activities with partner institutions. The international program at Oita University (IPOU) is expressly tailored for overseas students from partner universities - including those who have no Japanese linguistic ability.
