Kochi University was founded in 1949 as new authorized national institution on the amalgamated revision of Kochi Teacher Training School, Kochi High School and Kochi Young Men's Teacher Training School. Kochi Medical School was integrated into Kochi University in 2003. Kochi University was Established as a National University Corporation in 2004. Kochi University aims at providing an atmosphere of freedom and generosity with a background in culture of the region of Kochi.

The "Teacher-Training" program and Special course for Japanese Studies. There are two International Exchange Halls for foreign students and researchers at Oko Campus (Medical School) and Monobe Campus (Faculty of Agriculture).
