Profile
History
Wakayama University was founded in May, 1949,with the stated mission to "broadly disseminate knowledge as a center of academic learning, conduct in-depth research and teaching in specific academic fields, and nurture individuals who will make a positive contribution to society in accordance with the spirit of the Fundamental Law of Education and the School Education Law. "Amalgamating Wakayama Teacher Training College (Men's and Women's Departments) ,Wakayama Young Men's Teacher Training College, and Wakayama Economics Academy, three schools which each had a long history and tradition, Wakayama University began with just two departments, Arts & Sciences (currently the Faculty of Education) and Economics. In October 1995 the Faculty of Systems Engineering was inaugurated. In April 2008 the Faculty of Tourism began, and the university with its four Faculties continues to develop steadily as Wakayama Prefecture's only national university.
